Ever reach a goal and thought to yourself “Wow, I feel pretty bad ass right now?!” To be honest, it’s a glorious feeling.
Setting goals are a great way to motivate yourself to achieve what you want out of life. Recently I reach the goal of getting to the “Blue Level” on the Nike Running+ App and it felt amazing! Reaching that goal only made me want to set another one and push myself even more. But please remember, there was nothing simple or easy about getting to this goal.
When you are setting your goals make sure that they are attainable. I see too many people try to reach something that is simply unrealistic. For example, a lot of beginners set the goal of wanting to run everyday starting tomorrow. Just stop right there because that’s not going to happen if you do not set small goals to reach your overall goal. If you just set an overall goal and do not plan how to get there, two things are going to happen: 1. you are not going to reach your goal and 2. you are going to be pissed off/frustrated about it. But don’t let that get you down. If you have the passion and discipline, anything is attainable.
So it’s great that you have the goal of running of everyday but how are you going to get there should be the next question. If you aren’t running at all, why not start with the small goal of running 2 times a week. Once you have conquered that move it up to 3 times a week and keep going from there. Setting these small goals will allow you to avoid the feeling of failure and will get you to the overall goal, I promise.
Make sure you are setting realistic goals. Don’t tell yourself that you are going to earn a million dollars this week when in reality, you are a cashier at McDonald’s. Don’t tell yourself that you are going to run a half marathon next month and you don’t even own a pair of running shoes. Have a seat my friend and chill out because that’s not going to happen. Now, I’m not saying that is never going to happen but your timeline is making it impossible. Instead of saying you are to earn a million dollars this week, set the small goal of making more money than you earned last week. Take baby steps to get that million dollar goal. You want to run a half marathon? Great! Go get you some running shoes, start running a little bit at time and work yourself up to that half marathon. Believe in yourself and you will get there.
Remember, Bill Gates did not become a billionaire in a month.
